Chapter Seventeen

Brooke

“So, are you going to spill it or what?” Autumn asks me the next morning, as we’re walking across campus to class. Elena and Layla have gone ahead to their weapons training, but we both have a lecture on Skrum technology in the main building.

I glance over at her quickly, hoping my cheeks don’t look as pink as they feel. “Spill what?”

Autumn stifles a laugh. “Girl, you snuck in late last night and took a shower. And you’ve been humming all morning. All I want to know is which cadet you got it on with?” She drops her voice to a conspiratorial whisper. “Is it one of the Lokarians? Or is it that cute Naval officer you were talking to at dinner?”

“Carter?” I shake my head hard. “No way. We’re just friends. And why do you assume I got it on? I told you I was taking a late-night pod class.”

“With the instructor you hate?” She makes a face. “Your good mood is definitely not because of that jerk.”

I feel an urge to defend Koran and tell my friend that he isn’t the jerk I thought he was, but I know I should keep what happened between us a secret. I trust Autumn more than anyone else at the academy, but I also know that any whisper of something between me and a Lokarian instructor would have me on the first spaceship back to Earth.

A tall, Lokarian instructor strides by us in his snug black uniform, his boots thumping on the wide paving stones. His brown hair curls around collar of his jacket, and silver tattoos flash through it as they swirl up back of his neck. Autumn and I both go quiet until he passes.

“I’m telling you, I really love riding pods,” I say, when the alien is far enough away not to hear us, tightening my high ponytail with both hands.

She gives me a sidelong glance, but shrugs. “Whatever you say, but I know the look of someone who got some when I see it.” She points a finger at me and waves it up and down. “And you, my friend, have that look.”

“What look?” Carter comes up behind us, walking quickly.

“Don’t do that.” I put a hand to my chest as Autumn jumps. “You scared us half to death.”

He grins, giving Autumn a wave across me. “Sorry. I wanted to catch you before you got inside. Are you heading to the Skrum lecture?”

I nod and tuck a loose strand of hair back into my ponytail. “You?”

“Yep.” His gaze widens as it locks on my hands. “What happened to you?”

I’ve almost forgotten the scrapes on my palms from the night before. Koran had applied some salve to them after we’d gotten dressed, and the Lokarian concoction did a pretty good job of healing them, so now only small abrasions remain. “It’s nothing. I tripped.”

Autumn eyes them, then shifts her suspicious gaze to me, but doesn’t say anything. Instead, she focuses on Carter. “Brooke tells me you two have the same flight class.
